THE TOUGHEST SPORT ON DIRT!
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (May 29, 2007) - Twenty-one year-old Hugo Pedrero (Leon, Mexico) beat a group of the world’s best bull riders to become this weekend’s Jupiters Townsville Professional Bull Riders (PBR) Troy Dunn International champion. The Troy Dunn International was the pre-cursor to the Jupiters Casino PBR World Cup team competition. The PBR World Cup takes place June 8, 9 & 10 from Gold Coast Australia where five teams of five men each will compete, representing the United States, Australia, Brazil, Canada, and Mexico, each hoping to prove that their country has the best bull riders in the world. With Pedrero’s great showing in Townsville, Team Mexico will ride into the PBR World Cup with momentum for the top bragging rights.
Pedrero began the night on fire, scoring 88.5 on his first ride atop Lionel Simpson’s fiery bull, LSD – the highest score in the first round of the 40-rider competition. In front of a sell-out crowd, Pedrero went into the 10-man championship round drawing Glen Brodie/Diamond J Rodeo Co’s One Way or Another, covering him but receiving a re-ride. Pedrero was successful on his re-ride, Kent Hansen’s JC with an 88.5 score; making his night’s total 177 points which was enough for first place.
Pedrero had suffered a groin injury in the first round of action and when presented with his Jupiters Townsville PBR Troy Dunn International championship buckle he was asked how he was feeling. Pedrero replied in his Spanish-soft English, “Oh, much better. I won!”
Until last night, Pedrero had considered the ride that won him round two of the Built Ford Tough Series presented by Wrangler (BFTS) event in Detroit in 2006 – 90 points on Taylor Made Bucking Bulls’ Chili – the best of his career. Now Australia holds a special place in the heart of the young Mexican since becoming the champion of the Jupiters Townsville PBR Troy Dunn International.
Australia’s fire-cracker, Ben Jones (Golbourn NSW) provided the hottest competition to Pedrero, trailing by only 3 points and turning in a total of 174 points, earning him second place.
Jones was named the fifth and final rider for the Australian PBR World Cup team. BFTS Australians, Brendon Clark (Morpeth, NSW) and Jared Farley (Kempsey, NSW) make up the team, alongside 2006 PBR Australia Champion Tim Wilson (St. George, QLD) and Kevin Connolly. 1998 PBR World Champion Troy Dunn serves as team captain.
